LONELINESS OF THE SELFLESS PLEASER

‘Selfless’ people-pleasers constantly try to please others, and find significance in being liked by others. They cannot believe in their own value, dignity, and worth unless they are liked by others and have their approval. They could feel neurotic guilt when they cannot please all the people all the time. Their guilt helps to lessen the feelings of inferiority when they fail to reach other’s standards. Pleasers constantly practice conformity at the cost of self-determination, try to live up to external norms, and keep shifting positions for different people. Even if they get approval, they look out for more, as they get approval; they look out for more, as they often doubt the approval they receive. Being thin-skinned, they get easily hurt, feel criticized and persecuted and end up depressed. People avoid such pleasers because they have to be very careful not to hurt their fragile egos. With the result that people-pleasers feel lonely.
